Natural Dye Notebook :: No. 21, Dog Fennel

Posted by Erin Howe on

Eupatorium capillifolium

Dog fennel, endless, aggressive, persistent warrior in nature’s battle to take back my farm from me, was unexpectedly fun to put in the dyepot. Look at that ribbon! That silk! These are the colors you’d expect avocado to create if everything played by the rules we have in our heads. And yet, here’s dog fennel, creating yellows and yellow greens that ought to make avocado blush.

Since I doubt there’s any money in farming dog fennel, I’ll continue to fight, and it’ll continue to fight back. But every now and again, maybe we can put down our weapons and meet like this.
